Spirit Yachts

Becoming a skilled craftsman requires dedication, commitment, and opportunity to flourish. Whether an experienced carpenter, qualified electrician or a graduate, Spirit Yachts seeks out the most passionate of boat builders from all over the UK to join its team and put their skills into practise; building the stunning wooden boats that Spirit is famous for.

A very recent example of this talent is Jesse Gillespie, 30. Growing up in Bath, Jesse studied Geography at university but quickly realised his craving to move away from academia and office life; instead pursuing a career in carpentry and turning his hand to stage building. A keen sailor, Jesse later purchased a boat in the North of England and embarked on a three-year sailing trip to the South Pacific.

It was during this venture that Jesse realised his dream. Combining his desire to ‘work with his hands’ and his love for boats; he enrolled on a one-year boat building course at a college in Lowestoft, utilising his existing carpentry skills to fine-tune his talent and enabling him to join Spirit Yachts earlier this year.

Jesse attributes his ever-growing love for the job to the surroundings he works in. The enthusiasm and passion of the Spirit team allows him to continue to learn on a daily basis, whilst the responsibility and freedom he has been given [he is in charge of creating the saloon for the boat he is currently working on] enables him to express his ability without constraint – something he feels he would not be empowered with had he found himself working with another company.

Under the wing of Spirit Yachts, the sky is the limit for this shining star: Jesse would love to become a Project Manager as his career progresses, and commends the ethics of the company in relation to its support of newly qualified and inexperienced boat builders; nurturing their talents and developing them in a way that brings them to the forefront of wooden boat building. Spirit also works alongside Darren Chittock, head of carpentry and joinery at Suffolk New College, allowing the youngest of rising stars to get an insight into what it is like working for a world-leading boat builder.

Spirit Yachts is recruiting for experienced electricians and boat builders to join their busy team. If you are looking for a new role, please send your CV or brief description of experience to  enquiries@spirityachts.com.
