Suffolk School of Samba
The Suffolk School of Samba, based at St. Peters by the Waterfront in Ipswich has been around since 1994, the School specialises in the performance of Carnival Afro Brazilian percussion and Dance. With up to 40 drummers and 30 dancers. The School brings a Carnival atmosphere to any event with their Brazilian samba rhythms of Batucada, Afoxe, Maracatu and Samba Reggae, along with a bit of Cuban Conga, Rhumba and Salsa. Throw in a mix of rhythms from Funk, hip-hop and Jungle and you end up with a wonderful eclectic sound, The dancers add that visual carnival feel to the energetic sound of the band, performing set choreographic routines fusing Reggae, Afoxe, Hip-hop and African based movement styles.
The School has performed at 100's of Carnivals, Fetes and Corporate events across the county and beyond, some of which includes Ipswich's Music in the Park, playing to the crowds at Ipswich Town Football Club, fireworks in Christchurch Park and Center Parcs, Elveden, along with further afield, events at Luton Carnival, Manchester 5000, Notting Hill Carnival, Dublin St. Patricks Day Parade, the Berlin Afoxe Festival and Encontro's in Brighton, Liverpool and Cardiff. Plus numerous local Carnivals and Fetes.
The School is run by a group of enthusiastic amateurs, (no one in the School is a professional musician or dancer), meeting every Thursday for a fun rehearsal at St. Peters by the Waterfront. Where the evening usually goes chat, play/dance, pub. As a community group they welcome new members and are open to anyone over the age of 16. No experience required, just enthusiasm.
